2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 c. thick applesauce
3/4 c. raisins or dates
1/2 c. broken walnuts

Sift flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg together; set aside. Cream 1/2 cup shortening, 1 cup sugar and 2 eggs. Beat for 1 1/2 minutes. Add applesauce, raisins or dates. Mix well. Add flour mixture. Beat well and bake at 350 degrees for 55 minutes.
