SOS (MILITARY STYLE CREAMED
BEEF)

1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 tsp. Crisco or oil
salt and black pepper, to taste
3 tablespoons flour
2-1/2 cups milk (more if you like it thinner)
6 slices buttered toast or biscuits

Add the teaspoon of oil or Crisco to hot, deep skillet along with the ground beef. As beef begins to lose raw look, add the chopped onion, salt and pepper.

Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, until meat is completely cooked. Sprinkle flour over top and stir into meat and onion mixture until totally absorbed.

Slowly add milk, stirring constantly, until thickened. Taste and adjust salt and pepper.

Serve over 2 slices of toast or biscuits; fried egg is a great accompaniment!

I was stationed in Panama and we had some doggone good S--- on the Shingle. Most of the time but what was really good at the snack bar was Panamanian Empanadas. Umm, can taste one now!

Your recipe is ok but I did it a bit different while I was a cook in the Army and Air Force. I found it better to drain the oil and beef fat after the ground beef was browned a bit. Then replace it with butter. Before the flour was added I would add beef soup and gravy base and then flour and the other ingredients. Most troops liked their S.O.S. over fried potatoes along with eggs, bacon and toast.

Excellent recipe! I actually liked commissary food. My fiancée tweaked it a bit... she uses baked Pillsbury "butter tastin" southern homestyle Grands biscuits. The best chipped beef was the stuff that came in those US Gov't marked grey industrial size cans.

No Thank you, I remember something like that when in the navy. I made an oath then, that as long as there were other things to eat, I wouldn't ever eat that stuff again. God Bless, Larry

Two more ingredients: black pepper and a splash of Tabasco or Frank's Hot Sauce.
