My Mother's Recipe... A Family Favorite... softened butter 16 slices bread 2 cups diced cooked ham 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (1/2 lb.) 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded 8 eggs 3 cups milk 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper Tabasco sauce, to taste dry mustard, to taste cornflakes (crushed) 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted Spread butter on 8 bread slices; put buttered side down in a 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Place diced ham and both cheeses over the bread slices. Then, place another 8 slices of bread over the ham and cheeses. Combine eggs, milk, salt, pepper, Tabasco sauce and dry mustard. Stir well. Pour onto the top bread slices. Place the crushed corn flake crumbs over this mixture and pour a melted stick of butter over all this. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake, uncovered, at 350°F for 1 hour or until golden brown. Serve immediately. Note: You can use only Cheddar as well, but it tastes really good with a little Gruyere in it. Makes 10 to 12 servings.
