HOMEMADE LYE SOAP | |
5 lb. grease 1 can lye in 1 qt. hot water 3/4 c. borax dissolved in 3/4 c. hot water 3/4 c. ammonia 1 tbsp. brown sugar First step in making soap from waste fat is to wash the grease in a large kettle. Boil equal amounts of water and grease. Let it cool. Then remove salt and other impurities from the solidified grease. Add borax and ammonia and sugar to grease before adding lye water. Have your grease warm to stir. Let lye water cool a little before putting over grease. Stir about every 30 minutes, if lye seems to go to bottom. Stir until it starts to thicken like fudge. Do not stir too long. NOTE: The grease has to be pure. No oils or suet. |
