My favorite "Grandma cookie"! She used same recipe but added a tbsp. of Crisco. I suppose it has migrated from lard to Crisco over time.

I've been using this recipe for over 45 years. I use 2 & 1/2 cups flour plus 1 XL egg yolk. One Xmas I had the flu (too ill to bake) and my nieces and nephew almost disowned their favorite uncle! My filling is 1 lb crushed walnuts, 3/4 cup sugar, 3 egg whites beaten stiff. When baking, line the shelf below with aluminum foil to prevent over baking the bottoms.

My friends mother would always make these for special times, she would fill with almond paste. One of my favorite memories of Mrs. Lampert.

I have a original recipe that uses sour cream, lemon, and whiskey in the dough.

With our recipe, my Nana would roll the dough into quarter size balls, and put them into a bowl, cover & put in the fridge (one recipe makes about 75 balls). The next day, 12 balls come out & are rolled in powdered sugar, till they are long thin oblong shaped (they need to be cold & firm when rolled, if they warm up they get sticky). Then we fill them with nut filling, roll into a cigar shape & bake for about 15 min till golden brown. Then powder sugar them. My aunt rolls them out & uses a pizza cutter to make the square & then fills them. My favorite filling is Lekvar.

I use the same recipe, but I roll the dough between two sheets of plastic and refrigerate. This makes about six sheets of flattened dough, using one sheet at a time and a pizza cutter, I fill with apricot or raspberry filling or chopped nuts mixed with sugar and cinnamon. Hungarian great grandmother used to make it, as did grandmother... Wonderful!
