GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE 
1 (4 oz.) bar sweet cooking chocolate
1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
4 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk

Melt chocolate in boiling water and cool. Cream butter and sugar in bowl until fluffy. Add egg yolk, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add chocolate and mix well.

Sift flour, salt and soda together and add to chocolate mixture alternately with buttermilk. Beat until smooth. fold in stiffly beaten egg whites and pour into 3 greased and waxed paper-lined 8 or 9-inch layer pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Cool 10 minutes, then remove from pans.
