3 3/4 c. lentils 9 c. water 3 c. onions, chopped 3 c. carrots, chopped 6 c. whole wheat bread crumbs, about 17 slices 3 tsp. garlic salt 1 1/2 tsp. oregano 1 1/2 tsp. salt 9 tbsp. butter 17 (1 oz.) slices American cheese Wash lentils; add water and bring to a boil in large saucepan; cook 15 minutes. Add onions and carrots. Cook 15 minutes. Add onions and carrots. Cook 15 minutes or until lentils are very tender. Remove from heat. Stir in bread crumbs, garlic, salt, oregano, and salt. Melt butter in large skillet. Drop lentil mixture by rounded 1/3 cupfuls into hot butter. Flatten into patties. Cook until firm and golden brown on both sides. Cut each cheese slice into four triangles. Top each patty with 2 cheese triangles. Heat until melted. Yields 17 servings. |
