MRS. L.'S CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES 
1 pkg. (1 lb.) brown sugar
2 c. white sugar
2 c. shortening
4 eggs, beaten
3 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of salt
3 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips (1 lg. and 1 sm. pkg.)
4 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. hot water

Mix brown and white sugar. Add shortening, eggs, vanilla, salt and chocolate chips. Sift together flour and cream of tartar and add to above. Dissolve soda in hot water and add to mixture. Dough is quite dry and hard to mix.

Drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees about 10-20 minutes (depending on oven). Watch cookies as they may brown/burn quickly.
