NOEL (French Orange Cake) 
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
2 c. sifted flour
1/8 tsp. salt
3/4 c. chopped dates
Just enough water to dissolve soda
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. milk
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 c. sugar
1 lg. orange

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg. Add flour and salt alternately with milk. Add dates and nuts. Last of all, add soda that has been dissolved. Bake 1 hour at 350 in greased tube tin.

After cake is baked and still very warm, pour the juice of one large orange (mixed with 1 cup sugar) over it. Let cool before removing from tin. Set right side up on cake plate. Serve with peppermint stick ice cream or just plain vanilla.
