BREAD AND BUTTER SLICES 
Spear garlic cloves with wooden picks for easy removal.

4 qts. sliced, unpared med. cucumbers
6 med. white onions, sliced (6 c.)
2 green peppers, sliced (1 2/3 c.)
3 cloves garlic
1/3 c. pickling salt
Cracked ice
5 c. sugar
3 c. cider vinegar
2 tbsp. mustard seed
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
1 1/2 tsp. ground turmeric

Combine cucumbers, onion, green pepper and whole garlic cloves. Add salt; cover with cracked ice. Mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours; drain well. Remove garlic. Combine remaining ingredients; pour over cucumber mixture. Bring to boiling. Fill hot pint jars with vegetables and liquid, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath 5 minutes (start counting time when water returns to boiling). Makes 8 pints.
