1 c. butter
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. hot water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. applesauce
4 c. flour
4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. chopped nuts
1 lb. gum drops

Cream butter and sugar, add well beaten eggs. Dissolve soda in hot water, add to mixture, also vanilla and applesauce. Sift together dry ingredients and add to mixture. Mix in nuts and gum drops. Bake at 300 for 1 hour and 35 minutes.
