I use yellow cake and make cream cheese frosting instead of Cool Whip. I have made it both ways but cream cheese icing is much better especially the next day.

The recipe is much better when make the topping with vanilla pudding! You mix a large box of vanilla (instant pudding) with 1-1/2 cups of milk and then mix it in with the cool whip BUT make sure to "fold" it when blending! It makes it so yummy and gives it a more creamy flavor!!! Try it!!

I tried Duncan Hines strawberry cake with strawberry jello. Instead of cool whip I used cream cheese icing (can use sliced raw strawberries as garnish on top). Yum, takes almost like strawberry cheesecake.

I make this cake every Christmas. I use Cherry jello for one layer and Lime jello for the other layer. It looks so christmassy when it is cut into slices.

I tasted this cake many years ago and loved it and now finally like a decade ago I made it and it was as easy as 1,2,3 and as delicious so can make it for my family. Best cake I've ever had and soo easy to make. I give it a 10 stars. Thank you.

A girlfriend of mine made this for my college graduation this past may. I thought wow! How light and tasty. I asked her to send me the recipe and when I found out it was a box of gelatin and cake mix I was happy! I just made a strawberry cake with tropical gelatin. I can't wait to see how it turns out. My only question is, when you refrigerate it should you wrap it up or leave the cake exposed?

I wanted to say that angel cake also works wonders and peach yogurt or strawberry mixed with whip cream is also yummy.

Do you pour the jello over the whole cake or just in the holes you make?

 Jennifer (Kansas) replies:
My mom always mixed the strawberries in with the jello, then poured most of it over the cake. Then she would chill the remaining jello strawberry mixture and fold it into the cool whip... awesome!

 Shylah (Tennessee) replies:
Mix jello w/one cup hot water to dissolve then add one cup of the dethawed strawberry juices to jello. Slowly pour all but 1/2 cup of mixture over cake. Then with the remaining jello/juice reserve, pour into cool whip mix thoroughly and add dethawed strawberries. This make more of a frosting with much more flavor and texture! :)

Do you have to let the cake cool completely before pouring the jello over it?

Love this cake. We have been making it for birthdays for years. My mom made a delicious version with peach jello and sliced nectarines.
