RED VELVET CAKE 
1/2 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp. cocoa
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. cake flour, sifted
1 c. buttermilk
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vinegar

Grease and flour two 8 or 9-inch pans. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together shortening, sugar, eggs. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to cream mixture. Mix salt and vanilla with buttermilk. Add alternately with flour to cream mixture. Mix soda and vinegar separately, then fold into mixture; DO NOT BEAT. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. NOTE: Lay eggs out to warm at room temperature.
