LADY BYRON'S CHOCOLATE CAKE 
2 c. sugar
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. butter
1 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
4 heaping tbsp. cocoa
1/2 c. milk with 1 tsp. vinegar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs, slightly beaten

Sift the sugar, flour and salt together. In a saucepan bring to a boil the butter, water, shortening and cocoa. Pour mixture over the sifted ingredients and stir thoroughly.

In another bowl mix the milk, soda, vanilla and eggs and add to the flour mixture. Mix well. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9 inch cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

CHOCOLATE FROSTING:

1/2 c. butter
6 tbsp. milk
4 heaping tbsp. cocoa
1 box confectioners' sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Place butter, milk and cocoa into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add powdered sugar, vanilla and nuts.
