SOUR MILK DEVIL CAKE (EA) 
1 1/2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. sour milk
1/3 c. shortening

Mix above in order given. Mix 1/2 cup cocoa, 1/2 cup either coffee or water and stir over low fire until cocoa is melted and mixture is at boiling point. Add to other ingredients and beat long enough to mix smooth. Bake in two 9 inch pans. (If you have no sour milk put 1/2 teaspoon vinegar in 1/2 cup of sweet milk. Let stand a few minutes.) Bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes.
