BASIC BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
4 qts. sliced med. cucumbers
6 med. white onions, sliced
3 cloves garlic
1/3 c. salt
5 c. sugar
3 c. cider vinegar
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
2 tsp. mustard seed

Do not peel cucumbers; slice thin. Add onions, whole garlic cloves and salt. Cover with cracked ice; mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours. Drain well. Combine remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Pour over cucumbers. Heat just to a boil. Seal in hot, sterilized jars. Yield: 8 pints.
