1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 large egg (1/3 c.) or 2 small eggs
1-1/2 c. applesauce
2-1/2 c. sifted flour
1-1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1-1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. chopped walnuts or pecans
1 c. raisins, optional

Mix shortening and sugar. Add egg followed by applesauce, mix well. Stir in dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into a greased and floured 13 x 9 inch oblong pan.

Bake at 350°F for 45 - 50 minutes. Sprinkle powdered sugar on cooled cake or frost with a caramel, cream cheese, or white icing.
