APPLE CRUNCH
1 1/2 lbs. tart apples
1 tbsp. soft light brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. cold water
butter for greasing
Vanilla ice cream (optional)

TOPPING:

1 c. rolled oats
1/4 c. soft light brown sugar
1 c. whole wheat flour
Salt to taste
3 tbsp. butter, melted

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Grease a shallow 2-quart heatproof dish thoroughly with butter. Peel, quarter and core the apples, then thinly slice. Mix the sugar with the cinnamon. Layer the apple slices in the dish, sprinkling the spiced sugar mixture between the layers. Sprinkle over the water.

3. To make the topping, mix the oats, sugar, flour and salt in a bowl. Stir in the melted butter with a knife until thoroughly mixed.

4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples. Bake in the oven for 50 to 60 minutes, until the apples are very tender and the topping is crisp and browned. Serve hot or warm.
