AMBROSIA CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 c. fresh buttermilk, dissolve 2 scant teaspoons soda in milk
3 c. flour
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tbsp. cocoa in 1/2 c. boiling water
1 apple, chopped in fine dough

Cream sugar and shortening, add beaten eggs. Sift the spices with the flour and add alternately with the milk, then add the cocoa and chopped apples. Bake in layers.

FILLING:

3 c. sugar
2 c. sweet milk
1/2 c. butter
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. baking powder

Cook to soft ball stage, when dropped into cold water. Then add: 1 c. nut meats 1/2 c. raisins, chopped 1 orange sliced and chopped fine with 1 tbsp. grated rind

Let cool before spreading.
