Place in greased casserole:

4 c. chopped cabbage
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/4 c. water

Cover and place in 375 degree oven.

Mix together with fork:

1 c. bread crumbs
1/2 c. milk
1/4 tsp. grated lemon rind

Mix with the crumb mixture:

1 lb. hamburger
1 c. minced onion
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

Form into a cake the size of the baking dish and place on top of cabbage. Return to oven uncovered. When meat is browned place slice of American cheese on top and sprinkle with buttered crumbs. Return to oven until cheese melts. Baking time approximately 50-60 minutes.
