CHOCOLATE CHIP DATE CAKE 
1 (8 oz.) pkg. dates, cut up
1 c. hot water
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1 pkg. chocolate chips
Chopped nuts

Combine dates, water and baking soda. Let stand until cool. Combine together remaining ingredients. Add date mixture. Pour into 9 x 13 inch greased and floured pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and chopped nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. May cover with powdered sugar.
