COUNCIL BLUFFS APPLE PASTRY BARS
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. butter
1 egg yolk
Milk
1/2 c. crushed corn flakes
8 to 10 apples, peeled and thinly sliced
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. granulated sugar
1 egg whites
1 tbsp. water
1 c. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Mix flour and salt together; cut in butter. Mix egg yolk and enough milk to equal 2/3 cup. Gradually combine flour mixture and milk mixture to make a pastry similar to pie dough. Roll out half the dough to fit a 10 x 15 inch jelly roll pan or a cookie sheet.

Sprinkle bottom crust with crushed cereal. Layer apples over cereal; sprinkle with cinnamon and granulated sugar. Roll remaining dough and place on top of apples, fitting and pinching the edges together. Beat egg whites until stiff and brush over crust.

Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes. While still warm, frost with mixture of water, powdered sugar and vanilla.
