ORANGE NUT BREAD
3/4 c. orange peel, pared from 3 lg. oranges with potato peeler
1 c. water
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tbsp. butter
1 egg
1 c. finely chopped walnuts
3 1/2 c. all purpose flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. milk

Put orange peel and water into electric blender and whirl at high speed until peel is cut into fine pieces. Put the orange-water mixture and the white sugar into a pan and bring to a boil. Boil slowly until mixture is thick and gooey and reduced to about 1 cup, 30 to 45 minutes. Set aside.

In a bowl, combine the brown sugar and butter with a fork until butter is like coarse crumbs. Stir in the egg, walnuts and orange peel mixture, mixing until well blended. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together and add alternately to the mixture with the milk. Mix until just combined. Turn into well buttered and floured 9"x5" loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 1 to 1 1/4 hours, until toothpick comes out clean. Cool and slice. Tastes best the next day.
