PORTUGUESE SWEET BREAD | |
10 c. flour 2 c. milk 1/4 lb. butter 1 yeast cake 6 eggs 1/4 c. warm water to melt yeast cake 2 1/2 c. sugar 2 tbsp. Crisco Beat eggs until golden. Add sugar and warm milk; melt butter and Crisco. Pour milk mixture onto eggs. Stir well. Pour yeast cake that has been melted in warm water into this mixture. Add flour; stir well. Knead for 15 minutes. Let rise until double in bulk. Knead again. Let rise until triple in bulk. Grease 3 large bread pans. Separate dough into 3 pans. Let rise until double in bulk. Slit top with sharp knife or scissors and brush top with egg whites. Bake at 300 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. Cool on rack. |
