3/4 c. Crisco
2 1/4 c. sifted cake flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 c. buttermilk
3 eggs

Stir Crisco to soften. Sift in flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, soda and spices. Add brown sugar and buttermilk. Mix until all flour is dampened; beat vigorously 2 minutes. Add eggs; beat 2 minutes more. Bake in 2 greased and floured 9 x 1 1/2 inch round pans in moderate oven (350 degrees) 30-35 minutes.
