PASTE FOR HANGING WALL PAPER AND
SUCH

Beat smooth:

3 pts. flour in 2 qts. water

Add:

8 qts. boiling water

Bring to the boil and stir constantly while it boils for ten minutes. Cool.

When cold, add two tablespoons powdered alum and enough water to thin the starch until it just runs off a paint brush dipped into the mixture. Paint the reverse side of the paper well, working on a long table. Apply carefully and smooth on until it seems firm.

Note: Starch for clothing was made in much the same way, with the addition of a touch of indigo well stirred in.
