GREAT PASTIES
CRUST:

1 stick butter
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup boiling water
1 tsp. salt
3 1/2 - 4 cups flour

Melt butter and shortening in microwave. Stir in the rest of the ingredients. Don't over mix. Cool.

FILLING:

4 cups diced onions (yes, 4 cups)
1 cup chopped carrots (heaping)
3/4 cup rutabaga, chopped
4 cups potatoes, diced
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
Sprinkle garlic salt
1 1/2 lbs. pasty meat (70% beef, 30% pork)

Mix well. Roll dough into 10" circles. Add one cup filling on one side of circle. Wet (with water) edges around side with filling. Add 1/2 teaspoon butter on top of filling.

Fold empty side of dough over filling. Press (seal) edges tight. Trim edges and make a 1" slit on top (in middle) of pasty. Brush top with milk. Repeat until all ingredients are gone.

Bake for 1 hour at 400°F.

Makes 6 jumbo pasties.

Since microwave ovens vary in power, you may need to adjust your cooking time.

This is the best pasty recipe. I've tried many. The ratios of veggies and meats - perfect! Once cooled well, the crust is wonderful to work with. The crust is perfect for pasties. Do yourself a favor. Use this recipe. I am thankful to whoever sent this recipe in.
