DATE BARS 
A family favorite from the 1950's. Recipe may be doubled.

1 cup butter, melted
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup walnuts
1 1/2 cups flour

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, sugar and oatmeal. Mix well by hand, then add melted butter and nuts and mix thoroughly. Put 1/2 the mixture into 9x9-inch pan. Put on date filling, then rest of mixture. Bake in preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until done.

Filling:

1 pkg dates, pitted
1 cup water
scant cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, then stir in vanilla.
