DOT'S SUGARLESS DATE BARS 
This is a good recipe for those who have to watch their sugar intake.

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. orange or lemon peel, grated
1 1/3 cup dates, chopped
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
2/3 cup milk (I use 1 or 2%)
1 cup walnuts, finely chopped

Preheat oven to 325°F.

In mixing bowl, cream butter with eggs. Add vanilla, orange (or lemon) peel and dates.

In separate bowl, combine remaining dry ingredients. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating until blended. Spread into 10x15-inch pan. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts.

Bake at 325°F for 25 minutes or until done.

Makes about 25 (2x3-inch) bars.
