JIB'S SECRET SAUCE FOR
HAMBURGERS

This is a copycat recipe for the Secret Sauce used on the “Bonus Jack” hamburgers at Jack-in-the-Box Restaurants in the 1970’s and ‘80’s.

*IMPORTANT* The texture and flavor of this sauce are not the same unless it is cooked!

2 tbsp. dehydrated onion
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup yellow mustard
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 tsp. A1 steak sauce
2-3 dashes Tabasco sauce
1/8 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce

Place the dehydrated onions in a small bowl. Cover with one inch of warm water to rehydrate (about ten minutes).

Measure all other ingredients into a medium sauce pan.

Drain the rehydrated onions and add them to the sauce pan.

Cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until bubbling. Lower the heat to medium-low and continue stirring for another ten minutes. (Total cook time is about 15 to 20 minutes. The sauce should be a rich golden-orange color.)

Remove from heat and let cool in the sauce pan. Stir once in a while to help the sauce cool and to prevent a skin from forming on top.

Once cooled, store the sauce in your favorite squeeze bottle with a large enough opening to allow the rehydrated onions to pass. I use a plastic oil funnel to transfer the sauce into my squeeze bottles.

Phyllis, I hope you enjoyed this recipe. Honestly, I can't keep enough of it in the fridge!

And if you make enchiladas, you might like my chili gravy. Takes about 30 minutes. No more canned enchilada sauce for me!
