RED VELVET CAKE 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 eggs
1/2 c. red food coloring
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. buttermilk
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda
2 1/2 c. sifted flour

Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs and beat well. Combine food coloring, cocoa and vanilla; add to creamed mixture. Mix buttermilk, vinegar and soda; add alternately with flour to batter. Pour into two 9-inch pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Cool thoroughly.

FROSTING:

1 c. milk
5 tsp. flour
1 c. butter or 1/2 c. butter and 1/2 c. butter
1 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of salt

Combine milk and flour; cook until thick. Remove from heat and cool in refrigerator. Combine butter, sugar and vanilla; beat well. Add flour mixture gradually, beating well. Frost cake.
