MAPLE COTTAGE PUDDING 
1 c. maple syrup
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. milk
1 tbsp. shortening
1 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 egg

Bring syrup to boiling point. Pour into baking dish. Cream shortening. Add sugar, egg well beaten, milk and flour sifted with baking powder and salt. Pour batter into syrup. Bake in moderately hot oven until well browned. Turn upside down on a serving plate. Serve plain or if desired sprinkle with nuts or whip cream.
