This is not a pronto pup, This is a corn dog

Have played around with this recipe and I find if you use white, finely ground cornmeal it is better and also a skinless hot dog. If you have no allergy to peanuts use peanut oil also.

Is there a specific type of hot dog that Pronto Pup uses? The batter may be the same but the dog inside it has to taste great too.

This is not a Pronto Pup recipe - it's corn dog recipe. Pronto Pups are made with a flour-based batter, not with corn meal.

I worked for Pronto Pups in the Memphis area for about 17 years and yes, this is a pronto pup mix. While pronto pups are a flour based meal, it does contain some corn meal. And for best results, put sticks in hot dogs, place in freezer for a little while to get firm, remove them and roll on paper towels to take moisture off hot dogs. Batter stays on much better and you won't get a lot of grease popping from the moisture

It actually Is a wheat flour/cornmeal/cornmeal mixture:
Ingredients; enriched bleached wheat flour (Wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, ferrous sulfate, thiamine monostrate, riboflavin, folic acid), cornmeal, cornflour, sugar, Leavenings (calcium sulfate, sodium bacarbonate, monocalcium phosphate, sodium acid phosphate), salt, egg yolk, dextrose, rice flour, nonfat milk. (I have a bag as for the ingredients), in case anyone wants to tinker around with it!

I read a great column about the guy who first made Pronto Pups at the Minnesota State Fair. The flours included rice flour and wheat flour and cornmeal and of the other ingredients of course.

Actually, yes, the true Pronto Pup recipe does have cornmeal. It has more than twice as much flour which is what makes it a "flour based" batter. And it originated in Oregon.

Great recipe... have made these several times for special occasions! 22 year old grandsons Birthday latest event... I find if I warm the hot dogs a bit the batter stays on nicer. A big hit with everyone... Grand Haven has nothing better than this!

I have tried for YEARS to find a corn dog / pronto pup recipe that equaled the pronto pups that I grew up eating at the county fairs in central Illinois, but all recipes failed.. until I found this one! This is the very best I've ever found! The batter stuck, they were beautifully browned, not greasy in the least, and delicious. One hint, pour your batter into a tall ice tea glass to easily coat your hot dogs on the sticks.
