ALASKAN OATMEAL BREAD | |
2 cakes granular yeast 1/2 c. shortening (I used Crisco) 4 tsp. salt 1/2 c. brown sugar 1/3 c. dark molasses 2 c. scalding water & 2 cans or 2 c. canned milk or 4 c. hot milk 2 c. oatmeal 1 c. all bran & let set a few minutes Flour enough to make a med. stiff dough (approx. 8 or 9 c. white flour) Put the yeast in 1/2 cup of warm water with 1/2 teaspoon of sugar dissolved in it. Now add the ingredients as given -- when too thick to stir, put on board and finish kneading in the flour. Put in a greased bowl to rise, when double in size, punch down and make into 4 loaves. When dough has risen above an inch or more, bake about 45 to 60 minutes at 375 degrees for first 20 minutes; then at 350 degrees for the balance of the time. When done, remove from oven and turn on a towel right side up until cool. I grease the top of loaves with butter and cover with slightly damp cloth until cool. |
