APPLESAUCE FRUIT CAKE 
3 c. applesauce
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
4 1/2 c. flour
4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. nutmeg
2 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 lb. dates
1/2 lb. nuts
1/4 lb. candied fruit
Some red candied cherries

Boil together for five minutes the applesauce, sugar and shortening. Let stand overnight.

Dredge the chopped fruits and nuts with the flour, soda and spices, which have been sifted together. Mix all ingredients together.

Bake in wax paper lined pans in a slow oven (250 to 300 degrees) for 2 1/2 hours or until done. Fill pans about 2/3 full.
