MANDARIN BEEF 
2 tbsp. cornstarch
1 1/4 c. water
1/3 c. soy sauce
1/3 c. Karo syrup
1/4 to 1/2 tsp. red pepper
4 tbsp. oil
2 c. broccoli flowerets
2 onions, cut in thin wedges
1 carrot, cut in 2-inch julienne strips
1/2 lb. mushrooms, sliced

Mix cornstarch and water, stir until smooth. Add soy sauce, Karo syrup and red pepper. Set aside. Heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat. Add meat (1 pound sliced beef or 1 pound chicken strips), 1-2 minutes for beef; 2-3 minutes for chicken. Add 2 cloves of garlic. Remove meat, add 2 more tablespoons oil. Stir-fry vegetables for 2 minutes. Return meat to skillet; re-stir cornstarch mix, add to skillet. Serve with rice.
