CHEWY CHOCOLATE CHIP BARS | |
1 c. butter, softened 1/2 c. sugar 1 c. brown sugar, divided 1 tbsp. water 1 tsp. vanilla 2 eggs, separated 2 c. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder 3/4 c. chocolate chips 3/4 c. finely chopped nuts Cream together butter, sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add water, vanilla and egg yolks (reserve whites in a separate bowl); beat for 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in flour, salt, baking soda and powder. Spread into lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan or jelly roll pan. Sprinkle on chocolate chips. Beat egg whites until they form stiff peaks, then add reserved brown sugar, blending well. Carefully spread over chips. Sprinkle with nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until meringue is light brown. Cut with sharp knife while still hot. Makes 3 dozen bars. They keep well and can be frozen. |
