CHEWY CHOCOLATE CHIP BARS 
1 c. butter, room temp.
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 c. brown sugar, divided
1 tsp. water
2 eggs, separated
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. chocolate or butterscotch chips
3/4 c. finely chopped walnuts

Cream butter, granulated sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add water, vanilla and egg yolks. Beat in flour, salt and baking soda and baking powder. Spread in 13"x9"x2" pan. Sprinkle on chips. Beat egg whites until they form soft peaks, add reserved brown sugar, blending well. Carefully spread over chips. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until meringue is light brown. Cut with sharp knife while still hot.
