SWEDISH COFFEE BREAD | |
2 c. scalded milk 1 c. sugar 1/2 c. butter 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. crushed cardamom seed 1 pkg. yeast 1/2 c. lukewarm water 2 eggs, well beaten 8 1/2 c. white flour Combine first 5 ingredients and stir until sugar is dissolved. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast dissolved in lukewarm water, then add eggs. Add flour and blend thoroughly into yeast dough; knead. Set aside in a warm place until mixture is doubled in bulk, about 2 hours. Shape dough into 6 strips of equal length. Braid 3 strips together. Bake in 350 degree oven about 35 or 40 minutes or until golden brown. Before baking brush tops with milk and sprinkle sugar on braids. Makes 2 large loaves or 6 small ones. |
