SWEDISH SUGAR COOKIES 
1 c. sugar
1 c. shortening (1/2 butter + 1/2 shortening)
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt (opt.)

Cream sugar and shortening until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients; mix. Make pieces walnut size. Press down with fork dipped in water. Bake at 375 degrees for about 10 to 12 minutes. Makes about 6 to 7 dozen. You can use any flavoring: orange, almond, lemon, etc. and most crushed nuts can be added: walnuts, pecans, etc.
