1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. shortening
1 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of salt
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 egg

Cream together the sugar and shortening. Add milk, vanilla and egg. Sift together flour, salt, soda and cream of tartar. Add to sugar mixture and blend well. Roll into small balls and place on lightly greased cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Flatten with fork that has been dipped in sugar. Bake in 350 degree oven 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 4 dozen cookies that should be very crisp.
