FRENCH ORANGE CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. milk (skim)
2 c. flour
Grated peel of 1 orange
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. chopped nuts

Dissolve soda in 1 teaspoon hot water and pour over dates. Cream shortening and sugar, add egg, milk, flour, orange rind, nuts and dates. Bake in greased bundt or tube cake pan and bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.

Dissolve 1 cup powdered sugar in juice of 1 orange and pour over cake while hot in pan, or turn cake out on plate and drizzle with the topping. It will absorb all the juice.
