THREE-MONTH PICKLES 
cucumbers
2 c. vinegar
1 tsp. powdered alum
1 tbsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. pickling spice

Pack cucumbers in a 1/2-gallon jar. Mix vinegar, alum, salt and spice together; pour over cucumbers; finish filling jar with cold water and seal. Leave 3 months. Wash cucumbers in cold water and split. Heat 1/2 cup vinegar and 4 cups sugar until bubbly. Pour over cucumbers in bowl so you can stir. Let sit for 24 hours or longer before using.
