2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp. baking soda, dissolved in hot water
3 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 c. shortening
1 c. strong coffee or water
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. chopped raw apples
1 c. chopped dates or nuts

Combine all ingredients and bake for 40 minutes at 350°F.
