DATE NUT BREAD 
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Cover above with 1 cup boiling water. Let cool. To this add:

1 c. brown sugar
1 beaten egg
1 tbsp. shortening
2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chopped nuts

Grease a bread loaf pan. Pour mixture into pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.
