THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening (part butter)
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk, reserve white
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. flour
Walnuts

Cream shortening and sugar. Add yolk and vanilla, sifted flour and salt. Whip egg whites. Roll dough in small balls, then dip in egg whites and chopped nuts. Place in oven for 5 minutes at 350. Remove and put in thumbprint. Return to oven for 8 minutes. Put powdered sugar frosting in center and add cherry.
