ENGLISH BROWN STEW 
1 1/2 lbs. stew meat
Flour, salt & pepper
2 tbsp. shortening
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. sugar
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. Worcestershire
2 c. tomato juice
1 1/2 c. water
4-5 sm. round onions or 1 c. chopped onion
1 1/2 c. diced potatoes
3 med. carrots, diced
3/4 c. diced celery

Dredge meat in seasoned flour. Melt shortening and brown meat and garlic. Reduce heat and simmer. Add paprika, allspice, sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, tomato juice and water. Cover and cook 1 1/2 hours or until meat is tender. Stir occasionally, adding more water if necessary. Add onions potatoes, carrots and celery. Cover and cook 45 minutes to 1 hour or until vegetables are tender.
