ENGLISH BROWN STEW 
1 lb. beef, cut in 1" cubes
2 1/2 c. boiling water
2 tbsp. chopped onion
1/2 clove garlic
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. sugar
Dash of allspice
1/2 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/4 c. tomato juice
1 c. pearl onions
2 c. sliced carrots
1 c. cubed potatoes
1/2 c. diced celery

Flour meat and brown in hot fat. Add 2 1/2 cups water, onion, garlic, seasonings, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and tomato juice, cover tightly and simmer 2 hours. Add more water if needed. Add vegetables, continue cooking 30 minutes.

Serves 6.
