I am 67 yrs old and this cake is how my mom got us to eat whatever was put on the table... if you didn't eat your vittles you got no cake for dessert! To this day this is my favorite dessert bar none!!

I love this recipe! It's been around my family for years and is just delicious for warm weather. For Memorial Day, I'm using the egg white version of white cake to get a true white, using strawberry jello for the red, then topping the Cool Whip with blueberries for the old Red, White & Blue!

BTW, I have an official Jello cookbook, and the recipe calls for the 4-SERVING size package, which is NOT 4oz. The 4 serving size is the small box of jello, at 3oz. Hope that cleared up the confusion!

I made a mistake and bought Angel Food cake mix instead of white. It turned out so nice and sponge - it is now one of my family favorites.

I also do the pudding addition. My friend works at hy vee grocery and she said the same thing. All the packages, cans etc: are selling for the same price but, the packaging has all decreased in size. Really pathetic.

When I make this, I change the flavors of cake and jello every time. Last time it was lemon cake and line jello, this time it's orange cake and orange jello. Thinking about blending mandarin oranges up and adding to the cool whip.

I love this recipe however I changed it up quite a bit. I used a box of white cake mix and bought two boxes strawberry jello. I mixed a box of the jello and also a 10 oz. can of crushed pineapple into the actual cake mix before baking. I then let the cake cool and followed your instructions for the jello, topped it whip extra creamy whip and sliced strawberries. Very delicious and creamy!!

I have made this for years. I make a yellow cake, put holes all over the whole cake with a tooth pick.. I make cherry jello, pour over cake then put 1-2 cans of cherry pie filling over the cake then cool whip on top of that and chill for at least 3-4 hours. I keep it in the refrigerator overnight until ready to eat.. mmmmm

I had not made this cake in years but a few days ago I decided to. I didn't look at a recipe and made it wrong-only used 1 (3 oz.) box of lime jello in a lemon cake and used the regular amt. of water directed on jello box which was 1 cup boiling and 1 cup cold. Even though I did it wrong nobody seemed to notice and the whole group loved it! It didn't look quite right which is why I'm here today lol so next time I'll use the large box of jello. Of course anything topped with whipped cream is ALWAYS a hit!

I think I screwdriver this up. Daughter used 1 cup cold water. Will that be a problem?

I used regular fork and meat carving fork. I wanted more flavor, so used 2 small pkg. strawberry jello, and poured hot jello over hot cake, and put it refrigerator. after cake is cool, add a layer of instant pudding(vanilla or banana cream)(use pie instructions) slice bananas thin and place over pudding(one layer spaced out so a bit of room around each slice of banana) I finished it off with lite cool whip and decorated it with sliced strawberry's That's the way Mom make it, and it is to die for. Enjoy. Yes, it is a big cake, but there are never any leftovers.
* Needs to be keep in refrigerator, because of pudding, and cool whip
* FYI: I made this when I was a very young girl. Even though it was measured a bit different every time I made it, it always turned out good. It is pretty mistake proof. Don't be afraid to alter it to your preferences!

My daughter's 9th birthday party is Friday. Tiger theme. My plan is to use a white cake dyed orange and grape jello, which will hopefully look like tiger stripes. Plan to color the cool whip orange also and cut black stripes from sugar sheets. Any other suggestions?
