AUNT WILMA'S DATE CAKE 
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 2/3 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Combine dates with water; cool. Stir shortening to soften. Gradually add sugar; cream thoroughly. Add vanilla and egg; beat well. Sift flour, soda, and salt together 2 times; add to creamed mixture, beating after each addition. Add nuts.
